WHAT:
What: is the recommended frequency of taking the HBDI® assessment? It is now recommended to take the Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument (HBDI®) assessment every three to four years. This is due to several key reasons rooted in the science of thinking and the dynamic nature of today’s environment.
What we learned: Based on qualitative work with hundreds and hundreds of thinkers who have been HBDI® debriefed since the pandemic, the data revealed a significant increase in people’s HBDI® profile changing. For many, the pandemic represented a significant life changing event and many people saw value shifts occurring as a result.
In addition, job changes are part of today’s rapidly swirling environment as well as shifts in the way we work. As such, it makes sense that we are observing more changes in the HBDI® profile. Also, because of the increased number of changes in our lives, people are curious to see if their profile has shifted in kind. The HBDI® serves as a person’s thinking dashboard and our digital platform makes it easy and natural to check for changes back as roles and jobs change so frequently.
HOW:
How: An individual simply needs a new invitation to complete the assessment in order to see their new results. Check with your HBDI® Certified Practitioner for more details. It is recommended that you download the PDF of your existing HBDI® from the portal for easy access and comparison with your new data.
WHO:
Who: By retaking the HBDI® every three-four years, individuals and organizations can continue to build and maximize the benefits of Whole Brain® Thinking, ensuring that their cognitive tools remain aligned with their evolving goals and environment:
- Thinking Preferences Can Evolve: As described above, over time, individuals' thinking preferences can shift due to major changes in professional roles, personal experiences, or exposure to new challenges. Regularly updating the HBDI® profile ensures it reflects a person's current cognitive preferences, providing accurate and actionable insights.
- Adaptability to Changing Contexts: As workplaces and roles evolve, new cognitive demands often emerge. A refreshed HBDI® assessment helps individuals and teams adapt and align their thinking strategies with these changing contexts, ensuring ongoing effectiveness in problem-solving, communication, and decision-making.
- Learning and Development Insights: Just as organizations periodically review strategies and tools, personal development tools like the HBDI® can be used to reflect on career options, and learning & development strategies. This approach aligns with the Whole Brain® Model's emphasis on continuous improvement and adaptability.
- Enhanced Self-Awareness: A three-year cadence encourages individuals to take a “stop and think” moment to reflect on their growth and how their thinking preferences impact their work and relationships. This ongoing self-awareness fosters more effective collaboration and leadership.
- Increased HBDI® Features and Analysis: The HBDI® analysis, application tools and insights continue to evolve as our research continues and platform gets upgraded. This means insights not previously available will be provided each time an individual takes the HBDI®.
WHY:
Why: The HBDI® validation has shown that take-retake reliability of the data was strong when nothing had significantly changed in an individual’s world such as significant value shifts, role changes or occupational changes or a major change in their lives. In previous decades, such changes were much less prevalent than they are today. Our current work environment is fraught with more significant changes happening faster, as people shift roles and companies much more frequently than ever before. This was accelerated by the pandemic.
